Finances Ligue 1: PSG dominates, OM solid second but the gap is immense

OM firmly holds its runner-up position in Ligue 1 with €260M, but PSG is soaring with a colossal budget. How to bridge the gap and stay ambitious?

Reporter

The budget ranking published by L’Équipe has just been released, and unsurprisingly, our OM takes second place with 260 million euros. Let's be honest, it's an impressive feat, especially when you see PSG flying solo at the top with its 850 million euros. But what does this actually mean for us and our sporting ambition? Let's talk about it!

PSG: Another world

Well, let's not beat around the bush: Paris plays in another league. With a budget more than three times larger than ours, they can afford whatever they want in the transfer market. So, should we be worried about this ever-widening gap? To compete, we'll need to be smart, focus on teamwork, and find the right deals. Because we can never match them in spending, right?

OM: Second economic force, and then what?

260 million is still strong! We're ahead of Monaco (€140M), Paris FC (€130M!) – yes, you read that right, the newly promoted are ambitious – and we're putting pressure on historic clubs like Nice, Lille, Lyon, or Rennes, which hover around €110-120M. Clearly, we are establishing ourselves as the true runner-up, and that is the result of good management (thank you, Pablo!) and the enthusiasm we generate around the club. But we all know: a big budget doesn't guarantee trophies, especially if we don't spend it wisely. What do you think? Are we really using our financial power wisely?

The pressure of the transfer market: between ambitions and risk management

With such a budget, expectations are obviously huge in the transfer market. We all want new signings that will change the game, players worthy of our passion. But beware of the trap: spend yes, but not anyhow! We've already seen clubs blow their budget and end up in the red. Do you prefer we bet on one or two big names, or spread our investments over several promising players? Especially since the gap with Paris won't be closed overnight, should we play the stability card or go for the big coup this year?

And the outsiders, shall we talk about them?

Behind us, the pack is closing in: Monaco, Nice, Lille, Lyon, Rennes – all between 100 and 140 million – promises a fierce battle for Europe! Even Strasbourg, boosted by its new investors, wants to shake up the hierarchy. It's not the time to rest on our laurels, my friends. If we want to keep our number two spot, we will have to be vigilant on all fronts: sporting, financial, and even in terms of training.
