OM: Could Lyon really target Maupay as a joker?
The transfer window is closed in France and across Europe, but the special “joker” rule leaves a door open. For OM, that means one name could resurface: Neal Maupay, potentially linked to rival Lyon.
OL have wrapped up their transfer window without a genuine backup at striker. A deliberate choice, but one that casts doubts over the season to come. Michael Gerlinger and Matthieu Louis-Jean acknowledged the frustration of not having found the desired profile, while keeping the door open to a “joker” signing.
Maupay, a credible fit but an Olympic-sized headache
Among the options mentioned by L’Équipe, the name Neal Maupay intrigues. Left off OM’s European list, the French striker continues to struggle in Marseille and is looking for a way out. His No. 9 profile, able to play with his back to goal and link up, matches Lyon’s needs. But just imagine: OM helping to strengthen a direct rival—especially after this summer’s cold war over Malick Fofana? Hard to believe at this stage.
Other options on the table
Maupay’s name isn’t the only one being mentioned. Florian Sotoca, used less at Lens, could offer his experience and versatility. Morgan Guilavogui, who ultimately stayed at Troyes after his move to Southampton fell through, is also on the shortlist, as is Sékou Mara, still stuck at Strasbourg.
In the end, this piece is more brainstorming than a hot lead. Lyon are searching, hesitating, mulling things over… and Maupay above all embodies a symbol: players at the end of a cycle at OM, now bandied about in rumors more than expected on the pitch.
