OM Transfer News: Cornelius to Rangers, opening the door for new defensive reinforcements!
Derek Cornelius is set to join Rangers, giving OM leverage: space opened for defensive reinforcements like Ordoñez or Aguerd. The mercato enters its final sprint!
According to Fabrizio Romano, Derek Cornelius is now very close to joining Glasgow Rangers. The Canadian, used less since Marseille’s defense was overhauled, is set to join a club in dire need of reinforcements in central defense and down the left.

Cornelius, a reduced role at OM
Arriving in 2024 for €4m, Cornelius logged 47% of the minutes last season (23 matches), but today he is behind Balerdi, Egan-Riley, Medina, and sometimes Kondogbia. With a two-pronged search still under consideration for a center-back and a left-back, he was no longer part of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans, who already favors a revamped defensive setup.
Why Rangers want him
In Scotland, the situation is more than alarming: knocked out in the Champions League play-off after conceding 9 goals in two matches, Rangers hope that Cornelius, solid and adaptable, will inject some fresh blood into a defense in the midst of a rebuild.
A departure that clears the way for reinforcements
For OM, this transfer is not just a departure but a strategic reshuffle. Cornelius frees up playing time, wage space, and above all… clears the way for the arrival of the defensive profiles targeted today: Ordoñez, the touted Ecuadorian rock, or Aguerd, the experienced West Ham defender. Enough to strengthen Marseille’s center-back pairing before the window closes.
🔥 So, OM fans, what do you think of this move? A good piece of business to prepare for the arrival of a mainstay, or regret at seeing a reliable player leave? Let us know your thoughts!
