OM Transfer News: Ounahi, a Departure That Brings Relief for Everyone
It’s official: Ounahi leaves OM for Girona, a €6m transfer plus a sell-on percentage. An expected departure that frees up resources for Longoria and Benatia.
That’s it: the Ounahi saga is coming to an end. According to Matteo Moretto and several Spanish outlets, OM and Girona have reached an agreement for the Moroccan midfielder’s transfer. Fee: around €6 million, including a sell-on percentage. After months of rumors and aborted offers (Spartak Moscow, Brighton, Panathinaikos), Ounahi is heading to La Liga, where he’s about to experience a new league.
An unfinished Marseille chapter
Arriving in January 2023 after his successful World Cup, Ounahi had everything to become a key figure in OM’s midfield. But between injuries, fierce competition and inconsistency, he never managed to establish himself for good at the Vélodrome. Loaned out last season to Panathinaikos, he got back up to speed (37 games, 6 goals), without convincing OM to bring him back into their plans.
Girona, an ideal setting to bounce back
At just 25, Ounahi is joining a club on the rise, 3rd in La Liga last season and qualified for the next Champions League. His technique, vision and line-breaking ability could fit perfectly into Míchel’s attractive side. For him, it’s a dream opportunity to relaunch a career that seemed to have stalled.
A strategic choice for OM
For Marseille, this sale serves a double purpose: freeing up space in midfield and creating financial leeway to reinvest before the end of the window. With a price below the €12m initially hoped for but a secured sell-on percentage, Pablo Longoria and Mehdi Benatia are showing their pragmatism. In a summer when every euro counts, it’s better to move forward than stay stuck on an endless saga.
And you, Team OM?
So, happy with this outcome? Do you think OM was right to move on from Ounahi, or should he have been given another chance? Is it a good financial move, or a sale on the cheap? Your reactions in the comments, as always
