OM transfer window: Emerson Palmieri, the experience that can stabilize the left flank
OM are making a move for Emerson Palmieri: vast experience, manageable fee, an ideal profile to shore up the left flank and give De Zerbi options.
Let’s be honest: since the start of the season, the left-back position has been one of the biggest concerns for our OM. Amir Murillo shifted out of position, Ulisses Garcia thrown in without bearings… we’re making do, but it’s not a long-term solution. Roberto De Zerbi knows it, and so does Mehdi Benatia: if OM want to be solid at the back and ambitious up front, they need to recruit a true starter. And the name that keeps coming up is Emerson Palmieri.
A profile built for the top level
At 31, the Italy international (29 caps) boasts incredible experience: over 120 Premier League matches, nearly 50 in Serie A, European campaigns galore, and above all a trophy haul that would make anyone in OM’s squad envious. Euro 2020, the 2019 Europa League, the Champions League and the Super Cup in 2021, not to mention the Europa Conference League with West Ham… Emerson Palmieri knows what it takes to win. And in Marseille, we need that know-how.
A smart deal for the finances
The detail that changes everything: his contract at West Ham runs until 2026, but he could be released earlier, opening the door to a low-cost move, or even a free transfer. For a club like OM, which has to juggle big ambitions with an already tight wage bill, that’s a major asset. Investing in Palmieri means locking down a key position without blowing the budget — and keeping room for other priorities (Ceballos, Ordóñez, Zhegrova…).
Easier integration
Another plus: Emerson speaks Portuguese, a language he shares with several players in the locker room, including Igor Paixão, who plays right in front of him. De Zerbi wants a solid, fluid left flank; Emerson can be that link between defense and attack. And let’s not forget he already knows Ligue 1 from his stint at OL in 2021–2022: no adaptation time needed, he knows exactly what he’s getting into.
Why this is the right time
Marseille has often suffered from late or poorly integrated signings. With Palmieri, we tick all the boxes: experience, reliability, mentality, and an attractive financial opportunity. Yes, he’s 31, but look at Aubameyang: sometimes it’s experience that makes the difference in the crunch moments.
