A Turbulent Summer Around Ordoñez
The name Joel Ordoñez has long circulated around La Commanderie. At only 21 years old, the Ecuadorian central defender was a priority for Pablo Longoria and Medhi Benatia to strengthen a Marseille backline in the midst of reconstruction. The player, charmed by the Marseille project, had even expressed his desire to join the Mediterranean side.
But Brugge stood firm. Despite an offer of more than €30 million from OM, the Belgian leaders refused to let go of their gem. The Flemish-speaking club took advantage of the situation to secure a contract extension until 2029, along with a significant salary increase.
Brugge locks down… but plans for the future
This new commitment does not necessarily mean that the Ecuadorian will finish his career in Belgium. Quite the opposite: by extending their talent, Brugge protects its asset and places itself in a strong position for a future transfer, potentially even more lucrative. Several leading European clubs are already monitoring his development closely.

OM left empty-handed
For Olympique de Marseille, this is a real frustration. The Marseille club saw Ordoñez as a long-term solution, capable of quickly establishing himself alongside Aguerd, Pavard, or Medina. Failing in this pursuit, despite a massive offer, OM will now have to reopen other defensive options while relying on the recruits already integrated this summer.
A saga that speaks volumes
This case illustrates the realities of today’s market: even substantial offers are no longer sufficient against Belgian clubs that are financially solid and determined to defend their sporting projects. For Marseille, it leaves the regret of a transfer window where the intent was clear but execution did not follow through.
As for Ordoñez, he extends his journey in the Jupiler Pro League, confirming that he is one of the most sought-after young defenders on the continent.
