OM Transfer Window — A wild final day, between big moves and looming shadows

Three major recruits, one creative midfielder, and unwanted players still around: OM wrapped up its mercato in electric, chaotic, and contradictory style.

A mercato day worthy of a theatre play

The close of the 2025 mercato will remain etched in the memories of OM supporters. In four frantic acts, Marseille multiplied calls, express signings, and last-minute attempts. While fans were still digesting the slap at Lyon, the offices at La Commanderie were buzzing like rarely before. Fifteen departures, twelve arrivals — nearly thirty moves in under three months. Under Longoria’s reign, the logic of permanent reconstruction had never gone this far.

Three major recruits to strengthen the defense

At the heart of this whirlwind: defense. Within just a few hours, OM secured three major reinforcements. Nayef Aguerd, arriving from West Ham for over €20M, symbolizing solidity and experience. Emerson Palmieri, filling a left flank too often fragile. And above all, Benjamin Pavard, 2018 World Cup winner, loaned from Inter with an option to buy, the real marquee signing of this mercato. With him, Marseille finally gets a defensive leader, able to cover both central and right-sided roles. A Pavard–Aguerd partnership immediately raises the bar.

O’Riley, a creative touch… and unwanted players still stuck

To add some creativity, OM also secured the loan of Matt O’Riley (Brighton), expected to bring vision and flair in midfield. But behind these exciting arrivals lies another reality: a bloated squad. Despite efforts, several unwanted players remain. Neal Maupay, despite interest from Sassuolo, found no taker. Pol Lirola, Ruben Blanco, Amine Harit — all still on the books after failed exits to Turkey, Qatar, or Belgium. Only Derek Cornelius left, loaned to Rangers, more of a symbolic move than genuine financial relief.

A worrying financial bill

And here lies the real concern: finances. La Provence reports OM spent nearly €90M this summer, bringing in less than €74M. The result: a widening deficit, with the added burden of committing to pay at least €40M more next year, regardless of sporting results. A real Damocles sword hanging over the club.

On paper, the team looks stronger, more competitive, and ready for the Champions League. But by chasing opportunities and bowing to panic, the management has also endangered the financial balance.

Between excitement and concern

This last day of mercato offered emotions worthy of a Marseille soap opera: big signings, prestige names, but also failures and a hefty bill. OM ends the summer with a remodeled and ambitious squad… but weakened accounts. The pitch will tell if this bold gamble was worth it.
