Edon Zhegrova stays in Lille: what impact for our OM?
It's official: Edon Zhegrova will not be joining Olympique de Marseille this summer. While we all believed in a possible move from the North to strengthen our attack, the Kosovar international will finally continue his journey with LOSC. In fact, he is already on his way to rejoin the Lille first team this August 11, after spending several weeks with the reserves following his desire to leave. Quite a few clubs were in on it, and yes, OM was on the list. But in the end, Lille decided to keep him for another season…
Why this turnaround on Lille's side?
Olivier Létang, president of LOSC, did not hide having considered Zhegrova's departure. However, after some reflection, he prefers to bet on the talent already present in his team instead of going hunting for a replacement. It's understandable: Zhegrova is a player capable of turning a game around on his own, and with only one year left on his contract, Lille will try to make the most of it. According to what has leaked, the agreement reached is that the player stays until the end of the season, but a door remains open for a departure later. Should OM regret?
So, friends, should we really have regrets? We know that our OM was closely watching the case. But given the depth we already have on the wings and up front, was it really THE priority at the moment? Honestly, Zhegrova's presence would have brought creativity, that's undeniable. But at what cost? Between transfer fee and salary, was the investment worth it, especially since other profiles are still accessible on the market this summer? Let’s also not forget that betting on a player in the final year of his contract is sometimes risky in terms of motivation... What do you think, would you have bet everything on this gamble?
What future for Zhegrova and what options for OM?
Zhegrova will thus embark on a fourth season with LOSC, already with 107 matches and 26 goals to his name. Unless there's a surprise extension, he could very well leave as a free agent in June 2025, or even this winter if a serious offer comes in. For Lille, it's a chance to take, but for OM, it means continuing to explore other offensive avenues. Do you see another name to propose that could invigorate our attack?
