An OM full of confidence before facing Ajax
Three days after pulling off a stunning comeback win in Strasbourg (2-1), OM are preparing for a crucial European clash. Roberto De Zerbi made it clear from the start: “We’re preparing to win. We’re in a good moment, with results and strong performances. First Champions League game at the Vélodrome in this new cycle: we want to deliver and start strong to qualify.”
The Italian coach knows that Marseille’s momentum now has to show on the continental stage. After Madrid (2-1), it’s time for Ajax, an opponent he respects but does not fear: “They have quality and courage, but so do we. We have the tools to hurt them.”
The magic of the Vélodrome as a weapon
Asked about the importance of the fans, De Zerbi didn’t downplay the impact of the 12th man: “The supporters are always important, especially here. But it takes our behavior: a strong, courageous start like against PSG gets the crowd into the game. That’s how you create magic.”
The message is clear: OM will need to start strong on Thursday evening, just like they did against Paris, when the intensity of the opening minutes electrified the whole stadium.
A deep and united squad
With nine new signings this summer and a well-stocked bench, OM appear stronger than ever. De Zerbi is pleased: “Managing a game with Aubameyang, Emerson, Pavard or Greenwood on the bench is a different story. The newcomers bring freshness, enthusiasm, quality. But here, things swing quickly between euphoria and crisis: you have to stay clear-headed.”
The coach stresses the players’ desire: “Aubameyang absolutely wanted to come back, Medina said yes immediately, Pavard made sacrifices, Matt (O’Riley) wanted to join… When you feel that determination, balance follows.”
The Gouiri case, a message of support
Asked about Amine Gouiri, criticized after his missed chances, De Zerbi spoke out to defend his striker: “I told him in front of everyone: don’t think about the criticism. You played a very good game. Of course, a number 9 has to score, but he also has to make the team play. The goals will come.”
The coach reminded that there are different types of strikers: “Some score 30 goals a season, others also build play for the team. Gouiri is one of those. It’s not his brightest moment, but he played well against Paris and Strasbourg.”
Ajax, respect but ambition
Finally, De Zerbi shared his analysis of the evening’s opponent: “Ajax have a clear identity, an aggressive style and lots of courage. They have good players like Šutalo, Taylor, Bergwijn. I’ve already played against them with Brighton, they’ve changed but kept a core. They’ll come to play. It’s up to us to respond with our own qualities.”
The Italian wrapped up with determination: “I believe OM can make a mark in this competition. That’s what we built for. The Champions League is the toughest, but with pride and ambition, we can be there.”
The expected outcome: a roaring Vélodrome, a determined OM, and a coach fully embracing his European ambitions.
