The news broke on Sunday evening: the long-awaited clash between Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain, canceled due to a violent Mediterranean weather episode, will indeed take place this Monday, September 22, at 8 p.m., at the Vélodrome stadium.

A decision dictated by safety

Just a few hours before Sunday’s scheduled kickoff, the Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture made an exceptional decision: to cancel the match outright, faced with the threat of storms and flooding in the Phocaean city. The department had been placed on orange alert by Météo France, and the safety of nearly 70,000 expected spectators could not be guaranteed. In this context, caution prevailed over the sporting event.

The rules have spoken

As soon as the cancellation was announced, a real headache began between the LFP, OM, PSG, and the broadcaster. The Marseille club quickly took a stand: no question of postponing the match to another week or a later date, as the League’s regulations stipulate that a canceled match must, wherever possible, be rescheduled the following day. This insistence paid off: the LFP confirmed the postponement to this Monday, thereby validating Marseille’s position and the broadcaster’s agreement.

An evening of high intensity

This choice is not without consequences: the Classique will be played at the same time as the Ballon d’Or ceremony, offering both a sporting and media-heavy night. A prestigious duel between the fiery Vélodrome and football’s global showcase, a symbol of a rivalry that goes far beyond French borders.

And now, onto the pitch

For the players as well as the fans, this 24-hour delay changes little: the tension remains intact, the anticipation as strong as ever. After the storm, it is now on the field that the lightning must strike. OM, still marked by their frustrating but promising performance against Real Madrid, now face a unique opportunity: to break an eleven-year curse at the Vélodrome in the league against their Parisian rival.
