OM–PSG postponed: Marseille’s Classique called off due to severe weather

The Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture has made its decision: the Classico between OM and PSG, scheduled for this Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the Vélodrome, will not take place. The reason is a violent Mediterranean episode accompanied by thunderstorms and heavy rain, which has placed the department under orange alert. An exceptional decision, but one dictated by the need to ensure the safety of the 70,000 expected spectators.

A worrying weather warning

According to Météo-France, the region is about to experience severe stormy rainfall. Between late afternoon and evening, rainfall totals of 70 to 90 mm, and locally up to 120 mm within a few hours, are expected.

The risks of urban runoff and sudden flooding in low-lying areas of Marseille are considered particularly concerning. The forecasted peak, between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., coincided exactly with the kickoff of the match.

A decision made in the name of safety

Faced with this situation, the prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône decided to cancel the match, in consultation with the LFP and both clubs.

The objective is clear: to avoid mass movements of supporters in a context where the weather made organizing the match too risky. The prefecture is also calling on the population to limit travel and exercise caution, particularly in flood-prone areas.

Safety guidelines

The prefecture reminds everyone of essential precautions:

• avoid unnecessary travel and never take a flooded road,
• do not go down into underground car parks or basements,
• keep away from waterways and low-lying areas,
• shelter in a solid building,
• secure exposed belongings.

Extra caution is also requested from campers and those staying in outdoor accommodations.

A tough blow for the fans

This Classico was supposed to be one of the highlights of the season. Marseille supporters were eagerly awaiting the chance to challenge a PSG weakened by injuries and to hope for a break in their championship curse.

But the weather had other plans. The match will have to be rescheduled later by the LFP, a decision that leaves fans with a bitter taste, but one that reminds everyone that collective safety always comes before the sporting event.
