OM transfer window: Pol Lirola, still a Marseille player… but for how long?

Pol Lirola remains under contract with OM, but out of De Zerbi’s plans. How long will this Marseille saga really last?

Reporter

Pol Lirola has been a real Marseille saga for several seasons now. Still under contract with our OM until 2026, the Spaniard no longer figures in Roberto De Zerbi’s plans. So why is he still here when others, like Ounahi or Moumbagna, have already been shown the door? It’s hard not to question how the Lirola case is being handled, especially on the eve of a new season full of promise (or peril, depending on your view!).

Lirola: in the first-team squad, but not in the plans

Unlike some who were unceremoniously sidelined, Lirola continues to train with the first team. But let’s be honest: the arrival of Timothy Weah, who directly competes with Murillo on the right flank, has sealed his fate. Even though Lirola still made the matchday squad last year (19 appearances, decisive against Lyon — we won’t forget that!), the pecking order is clear now. Let’s be real, he didn’t shine over the long haul either, as shown by his needless red card against Lille and a… let’s say discreet end to the season.

So do we keep him or let him go? What do you think? Tell us in the comments if, despite everything, you would have tried to give him another chance!

Transfer market: Spain and Italy open the door

On the transfer front, Lirola does have options. According to L’Équipe, he is drawing interest mainly in Spain and Italy. The hottest lead points to Pisa, newly promoted to Serie A and coached by Gilardino (yes, the former Milan striker!). But is that really a good way out for Lirola? His stint at Frosinone last season didn’t exactly convince (28 matches, 2 goals, 2 assists, and relegation at the end…). Can a move to a promoted side relaunch his career, or is it a risky bet for a player who has never truly confirmed his qualities over time? We all remember his promising beginnings, but doubt is creeping in now.

And financially, folks? Keeping a player who isn’t part of the project costs money! His salary, even if it isn’t the highest in the squad, weighs on the wage bill. A departure would free up room for other reinforcements, no small thing at a time when every euro counts in building a competitive team.

What future for Lirola and OM? Your move!

As we can see, Pol Lirola’s situation is still unclear. Stay at OM to warm the bench or try a new challenge elsewhere, even if it means starting from scratch? And for our club, is it better to sell quickly or wait for a better offer? Opinions differ, and that’s exactly what makes the debate interesting.

So, what would you do in De Zerbi’s shoes? We’re waiting for your thoughts, your analysis, and your standout memories of Lirola in our colors. Come debate — over to you; the transfer window is only just getting started!
