Pablo Longoria: Defender of Ligue 1 and Ligue 1+
Ligue 1 is entering a new era with the arrival of the famous Ligue 1+ platform. Everyone's talking about it, and our president Pablo Longoria doesn't hide his enthusiasm (nor his expectations!) for this strategic shift. So, what does it concretely change for our OM, for French football, and above all for us, the supporters? Let's analyze all this together.
Control, sovereignty and... independence: the French model?
Longoria pounds the table: he wants our Ligue 1, and therefore our OM, to take control of its audiovisual destiny. No more underselling our rights, no more relying on broadcasters who only care about their business! The goal with Ligue 1+? Control the content, the distribution, the data, in short, the entire relationship with us, the fans. Inspired by the NFL, this project aims to put the supporter at the center – finally, some will say!
But, let's be honest, friends: do we really believe that a 100% French platform can compete with the European giants? The model is enticing, but it will take more than a good idea for it to work. In your opinion, are we on the right track or is it just another PR stunt?
A risky bet... but necessary?
Ligue 1+ will broadcast 8 out of 9 matches each matchday. Great for those who like to switch between matches... but what will happen to all the ongoing contracts, especially with BeIN Sports? Longoria promises nothing will be rushed, but the risk is that supporters lose track or have to multiply subscriptions – and we know our wallet isn't infinite!
There's also the question of piracy. On this subject, no evasiveness: Ligue 1 loses millions every year. Longoria demands a real legislative response, as elsewhere in Europe. But let's be clear, is the solution really to lock down access or finally offer a product that makes people want to pay? Tell us, who among you is ready to drop their subscription to support Ligue 1, even if the offer isn't perfect?
The supporter at the center... or just the wallet?
We all want to believe in this promise: football that thinks about its fans first. The stands are fuller (+17% occupancy rate since 2019), but we're still far from English or German revenues. That's where Ligue 1+ has to play its part: an accessible, innovative product that doesn't treat us like cash cows. Longoria says that the independence of French football is the key to attracting investors, keeping our talents... and why not see OM regain the place we deserve in Europe!
But that, friends, will only work if we, the supporters, really find our footing. So, does this new model inspire confidence in you? Or do you fear it's yet another project thought up without asking for our opinion?
OM, driver of change or just a follower?
Longoria assures: OM fully believes in this project and wants to be an actor in the renewal of French football. But we know the story, don't we? It remains to be seen if our club will really be listened to in the decisions or if we'll still have to deal with Parisian or Lyonnais interests... In Marseille, we know how to make ourselves heard, especially when it comes to defending our passion. Do you think OM can stand out in this new deal?
Let's talk about it together!
So, friends, Ligue 1+: hope or mirage? Good plan for OM or just smoke and mirrors?
