Back-to-back titles after 19 years of waiting. Have Lisbon’s Lions rediscovered their continental roar?

The Green-and-White Lions: Identity & Roots

Founded in 1906, Sporting Clube de Portugal is one of Portuguese football’s big three. The green-and-white Lions of Estádio José Alvalade— a 50,095-seat arena renamed for their founding president—have flown Lisbon’s colors for 119 years. Nicknamed “Os Leões,” they embody Portugal’s talent factory at the Alcochete Academy, a globally respected nursery.

The Champions’ Renaissance

After 19 barren years, Sporting reclaimed Portugal in 2021 under Rúben Amorim, then doubled down with historic back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025. The 2024–25 crown, sealed on the final day against Vitória (2–0) with Viktor Gyökeres (39 league goals) and Pedro Gonçalves, signaled a golden generation reborn. Standing up to the Benfica-Porto duopoly for two straight seasons confirmed their return to the summit after decades of waiting.
