Real, Ajax, Sporting, Atalanta… How did OM’s rivals respond this weekend?
On the eve of OM’s big Champions League return, here’s a round-up of their European opponents: Madrid in control, Ajax reassured, Atalanta sparkling… and Brugge in crisis.
Real Madrid: Mbappé leading the pack
Still perfect in La Liga, Los Blancos won 2-1 at Real Sociedad. Mbappé struck early before providing an assist for Güler. Reduced to ten men for an hour, Madrid bent but never broke, relying on Courtois to preserve their streak. Resilience and efficiency: a warning for OM.
Ajax: Godts on fire, attack back in rhythm
The Dutch side dominated Heracles (3-1) thanks to a Godts brace and a goal from Klaassen. Their attacking play regained fluidity, especially in combinations around the box. With 10 goals scored in 5 Eredivisie matches, Ajax will be confident.
Sporting Portugal: clinical finishing
In Famalicão, the Lions struggled but won 2-1 thanks to Gonçalves and Suárez. Less dominant than usual, they compensated with ruthless efficiency. The mark of a team capable of punishing the slightest mistake.
Atalanta: attacking showcase
The Bergamaschi swept aside Lecce (4-1) with a De Ketelaere brace and a Scalvini gem. True to their style, they unleashed relentless attacking waves and ferocious intensity, suffocating their opponent. When Atalanta shifts gears, few teams can cope.
Newcastle: hard-fought victory
The Magpies finally earned their first win (1-0 against Wolverhampton) thanks to Woltemade. A tough match, few chances, but lots of energy and regained solidity. A “foundational” win to reignite momentum.
Union Saint-Gilloise: steady management
A narrow but valuable win (1-0 at Dender) for the Belgians. Rodríguez scored, and USG mostly controlled without forcing it. Efficient but less spectacular than usual, proof of growing maturity.
Liverpool: Salah, the ultimate savior
Utterly dominant at Burnley (80% possession, 27 shots), the Reds had to wait until the 95th minute to win thanks to a Salah penalty. Arne Slot rotates his squad, but the mentality remains intact: Liverpool always finds a way.
Club Brugge: crisis of confidence
A huge setback against La Louvière (0-1). Despite 69% possession and 21 shots, Brugge never found the breakthrough. Ineffective up front, shaky at the back, Hayen’s men are a worrying sight. One to watch: a European opponent full of doubts.
For OM, this weekend is a clear reminder: every future Champions League opponent comes with its own set of strengths and weaknesses. It’s up to De Zerbi and his players to capitalize on them.
