Youngsters on the rise

Still unbeaten in preseason (2 wins, 3 draws), Roberto De Zerbi’s OM has impressed with its style of play and mindset. But beyond the new signings already integrated, it’s the academy talents who are stealing the spotlight. Darryl Bakola and Robinio Vaz confirmed their potential against Sevilla FC (1-1), winning over both staff and supporters.

Bakola, the calm strength

A 17-year-old attacking midfielder, already seen last season, Bakola played without fear. Starting against Charleroi, then again making an impression against Sevilla, he amazed with his technical maturity and composure. Frequently found by his teammates, he dared to try things, took initiative, and imposed his precision. Fans’ reactions say it all: “Another great performance,” “Bakola, I get it now,” “He’s only 17.” The future seems to be his.

Vaz, a striker in the making

At 18, Robinio Vaz is establishing himself as a credible alternative in the number 9 role. Already tested in Ligue 1 last season, he showed against Sevilla that he can trouble a defense. Powerful and clear-headed in his decisions, he created openings and troubled the Andalusians, confirming his progress after a strong match against Charleroi.

De Zerbi approves and encourages

Asked at a press conference, Roberto De Zerbi didn’t hide his satisfaction:

“We’re counting on them. They’ll get more minutes than last year. That’s the club’s policy. We shouldn’t throw them in too early, but we shouldn’t be afraid to play them either.”

A strong message, proof that the Italian coach sees Bakola and Vaz as much more than summer fill-ins: genuine rotation options.

A promising generation

With Bakola, Vaz, as well as Yanis Sellami and Keyliane Abdallah, OM can hope to see a talented generation blossom. In a season where matches will come thick and fast, these youngsters could quickly become indispensable. And at the Vélodrome, rising youth talents have never left anyone indifferent.
